History Of Coimbatore

Coimbatore is also known as Kovai is situated on the banks of river Noyyal. Coimbatore is one of oldest cities in Tamilnadu and the roots show that the city existed prior to 2nd Century AD. Coimbatore was ruled by Irula chief called Kovan and it later got its name as Kovai/Coimbatore. Later it was brought under Chola control in the 2nd or 3rd Century AD by Karikala Cholan. During the Nayaks rule the whole country was divided into palayams and still lot of places are called as palayams in Coimbatore. When Kongunad fell to the British along with the rest of the state, its name was changed to Coimbatore and it is by this name that is known today, except in Tamil, in which is still called as Kovai.
